INITIAL ACTION
Isolate the spillage (This can be done by blocking any drains and preventing the oil from reaching any drainage systems or spreading away from the tank. For example put down absorbent materials: sand bags, drain cover’s. But be careful not to get the oil onto your clothing)

Stem the source of oil (We have found that the best method for this, on plastic tanks, is to take a bar of solid soap (Imperial Leather type works) and rub carefully it into the damaged area - It really is the best way of temporarily stemming the flow from a cracked plastic tank!)
If oil has already entered the drainage system then immediately telephone the Environment Agency Emergency Hotline (0800 80 70 60) and advise them of the situation. (If the fuel/oil has not entered the drainage system and you do not believe there is a risk of it doing so then there is no requirement to contact the Environment Agency)
